Liberia is advancing a regional fibre-optic expansion strategy through a partnership with TRANSCO CLSG.
At a workshop in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia joined Sierra Leone, Guinea, TRANSCO CLSG and the consultancy TACTIS in agreeing how to sell the spare fibre-optic capacity along the TRANSCO CLSG power transmission network.
Liberia stressed that it relies on a single international route, the ACE submarine cable landing in Monrovia, and wants land links through Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea as a backup. The line also runs through several Liberian counties, so it could carry broadband to schools, clinics and businesses beyond the capital. Liberia presented its plan for a special purpose vehicle bringing together licensed operators and government.
The countries agreed to form a regional consortium of designated licensed operators, and set a roadmap to put the capacity to use before the end of 2026: ministries name their consortium members, a technical working group drafts the consortium agreement, and TRANSCO CLSG signs commercial terms with the operators.
